You know the normal end to that phrase – time flies when you’re having fun. But these days, I feel like we should simply adjust it to “time flies,” because it’s moving fast all the time.
I recently saw a Facebook post that said,
“I was just minding my own business
then all of a sudden
1975 was 50 years ago.”
The thought made me chuckle, but I realize it’s so true. We look back fondly on our memories, and they seem like they’re just yesterday.
Scientists at the University of Michigan say there’s a scientific reason for this feeling. According to an article on their website, “Experts say our perception of time greatly changes as we age, which makes certain periods feel like they go by quickly. For an 8-year-old, a week is a big portion of their life. For an 80-year-old, a week is a much smaller portion of their life, which contributes to the feeling that it went by quickly.”
That makes a lot of sense, but it still doesn’t make me feel any better about time rushing by. So, what can I do? I can remember to savor and enjoy each moment because all are important.
Savor each moment!
Engage Your Senses:
- Pay close attention to the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures around you.
- Notice the specific details of your experience, such as the color of a sunset, the taste of a piece of food, or the feel of the wind on your skin.
Practice Mindfulness:
- Be fully present in the moment, rather than worrying about the past or future.
Appreciate and Express Gratitude:
- Identify and appreciate the positive aspects of each experience
- Share your good feelings with others or express gratitude for the moment.
Slow Down and Be Patient:
- Allow yourself to fully experience the moment without rushing to the next activity.
Reflect:
- Write down your thoughts and feelings about the experience.
- Recall positive experiences and savor them again through memories or photos.
