The Golden Years redefined – the best is yet to come

Stay playful – regardless of your age

Have you ever heard the term “young at heart”? At my age, I totally get it now. Having fun isn’t just for the young. In fact, having fun at any age supports your wellbeing. At my age I’m not playing hopscotch or jumping rope, but staying playful can take on different forms as you age.

For instance, there’s a new line dance taking the internet by storm, maybe you’ve heard of it – Boots on the Ground. If you don’t know it by that name, you’ve probably heard – “Where them fans at?” On the surface, it’s sort of silly, but when you look at it a little deeper it’s all about people playing with the fans and having fun. They’re also getting a little exercise, interacting with others and enhancing brain function – because they’ve got to remember the steps to stay in line with the group.

Benefits of staying playful

1. Stress Busting:

  • Taking time for some fun can work wonders for your stress levels, helping you forget about some of life’s daily stressors.
  • Fun activities trigger endorphins, the body’s natural “happy chemicals,” which can relieve stress and promote a sense of wellbeing. 

2. Mood Lift:

  • Laughing and having fun releases dopamine (that “feel-good” neurotransmitter), which can put the brakes on negative emotions and leave you feeling more upbeat.
  • Simply indulging in activities you love can help you feel more positive and optimistic about life in general.

3. Building Connections:

  • Hanging out with others and doing fun things can also help fight off loneliness and isolation – which is crucial for keeping your mental health in check.
  • Shared laughter and experiences create empathy and trust, which are key ingredients for deep, meaningful relationships.

4. Boosting Wellbeing and Purpose:

  • Hobbies and things you’re passionate about give you a sense of accomplishment and mastery, which in turn boosts your confidence and self-esteem.
  • Taking time for play also helps keep burnout at bay and keeps your attitude fresh and positive.

So, break out those fans – or whatever activity makes you smile – and let’s stay playful!
