When I was younger, I loved to read and visited the library weekly. Fast forward to after college and reading took a back seat to work and family responsibilities. Now that the children are grown, I can get back to some of those things that brought me joy in my younger years and reading is one of those things.
But now, there’s a new issue. My eyes aren’t quite what they used to be, so reading a book isn’t as easy and reading from a tablet is even worse. That’s why I was so happy to discover audiobooks because they’re now my new best friend.
Even if you’re someone who loves the feel, smell, and experience of a real book, I encourage you to give audiobooks a chance.
What I love about audiobooks
- Most local libraries have an extensive collection of audiobooks that you can borrow for free. You heard me, for free! My local library’s app is called Libby and it’s easy to download and get started.
- Using the Libby app, I can search by title, author, or genre to find something I like. And, if I see something that isn’t currently available, I can place it on hold and will get notified when it’s ready for me to borrow.
- Libby lets me easily switch between my tablet and phone and the app remembers the exact place in the book where I last listened and can direct me back to that spot when I reopen the app.
- I don’t have to physically hold the book and can listen as I multitask in the kitchen or while writing this blog. 😊
- Many audiobooks are read by the author, so it’s extra special to hear them tell their story and listen to the nuances in their voice and tone as they read. That helps draw me into the story.
- I don’t have books piling up around me that I haven’t yet read. If you’re a habitual book purchaser, I’m talking to you!
- And, my favorite reason to love audiobooks is I don’t have to find, and put on, my glasses.
Other benefits of audiobooks
According to BestLifeOnline.com, there are also other benefits of audiobooks. Some include:
- They can help boost your mood and disrupt negative thinking patterns that may be causing you stress.
- Listening to audiobooks engages your brain and supports your cognitive function.
- Since you have to focus on the words, listening helps promote mindfulness.
- The narration of the audiobook may alleviate feelings of loneliness because you’re listening to a human voice.
