The Golden Years redefined – the best is yet to come

Recharge with sunshine

After what felt like a long winter, we’re finally turning the corner into warmer weather. But it’s been rainy for the past couple of months, with glimpses here and there of the beautiful, warm weather to come. To be honest, what I’m really waiting for is the sunshine and blue skies. When I wake up to sunshine it helps to brighten my mood, and when I’m sitting in the yard, I love feeling the warm rays on my skin.

Why does sunshine make us feel good?

Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a “feel-good” hormone and as a result when we’re exposed to the sun it can improve our mood, reduce anxiety, and decrease the risk of depression.

And on top of that, being out in nature also promotes relaxation and inner peace. We’re able to use our senses to take in everything that’s going on around us, like the color and smell of the flowers, the sound of a running stream and the birds chirping in the trees.

Being in the sun also helps our physical wellbeing

Exposure to sunlight promotes the production of Vitamin D in our bodies, and that helps us maintain healthy bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Sunlight can also stimulate the production of white blood cells that help us fight off infection. And activities like walking and gardening can improve heart health, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and improve balance.

Friends make the sunshine even better

Enjoy time outdoors with friends. Take a walk, enjoy a patio lunch or work in a community garden. All ways to strengthen your connections with friends and family and soak in some sun.

Enjoy the sun, but stay safe

Remember, while the sun is beautiful and beneficial, it’s important to take the right precautions when out in the sun.

  • Apply sunscreen regularly
  • Wear protective hats, accessories, and clothing
  • Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours of 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Drink water to stay hydrated. Limit alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
  • Monitor your skin for changes, including abnormal growths, moles, or changes in skin color.

So, let’s get out there and enjoy those rays! Soak them in!
