The Golden Years redefined – the best is yet to come

Bounce back from illness – boost your immune system

I had a slight setback a couple of weeks ago when I tested positive for COVID. This was my second time with the virus; the first was a couple of years ago. I’m blessed to share that my symptoms this time weren’t that bad, and in fact better than the first time, but I did need to take a couple of weeks off from Embracing Golden as I recovered. And while I’m on the mend and getting better each day, I’m still dealing with a lingering cough and a little weariness.

The experience made me consider how it takes longer to bounce back from illness as we age. Remember when you were young and skinned your knee playing outside? The scab formed the very next day and healing had already begun. Fast forward to today – if you get a cut or a scrape have you noticed that it takes much longer for healing to start? It may be a few days before the scab appears and even longer for it to fall off. It’s also the same if you get a bruise or bump, you feel the effects days later. What’s going on that makes this happen and what can we do about it?

Your immune system changes as you age

Immunity — your body’s defense system — tends to get weaker with age. And our bodies produce fewer immune cells as we age, including white blood cells, and that slows down healing. But it’s not something that can be predicted because there’s no set age when immunity decreases, and it occurs differently for each person. The good news is that our immune system is still working on our behalf, even as we age. What can we do to support our immune system?

Show your immune system some love

  • Stay on top of your health. Maintain your regular check-ups and follow your doctor’s recommendations. If you haven’t yet scheduled your yearly physical, now is the time.
  • Sleep well. Research shows that too little sleep, or poor-quality sleep can lower your immunity. Try to get at least 7 hours sleep each night. If you have trouble falling or staying asleep, discuss it with your doctor.
  • Look for ways to reduce stress. Over time, stress may lessen your immune response. Meditation and yoga are great things to try.
  • Move more often. It’s also a good idea to incorporate regular exercise into your routine. Even moderate physical activity can help give your immune system a boost. Now that spring is here, I look forward to getting outside more and walking in the park.
  • Eat well and stay hydrated. Eating a varied diet full of vitamin- and mineral-rich foods (like fresh vegetables and fruit) helps your body — including your immune system — function at its best. I’m also adding more vitamins and minerals into my diet, including supplements like elderberry and sea moss gel (that I’ve learned to make myself).
